My pieces all begin as hand tinted etchings. They are created with dots scratched onto a thin zinc plate that has been coated with an acid resist. The dotting removes the coating so that eventually when the plate is submerged in nitric acid the acid will eat away the metal only in those places, incising the image into the metal. This allows for a much more delicate contour than a scribed outline and also is very effective for subtle shading. The very finely detailed plate is then inked in sepia, printed on my etching press, and finally hand tinted with watercolor on each individual piece.

A detail showing the tiny "dots" that make up each image. (Prior to hand-watercoloring.)

Etching is a centuries old technique. Nothing much has changed in the process since the time of Rembrandt. My 100 year old etching press is as effective in printing as my contemporary press (and is much more beautiful!).

Detail after a piece has been hand watercolored.

The quiet time spent in my studio is a time for introspection. The prose that accompanies each image flows easily while I draw. The result is gentle, dreamy imagery and accompanying thoughts. The original hand tinted etchings and the beautiful reproductions derived from these both offer soothing sanctuaries for the spirit. Many are playful, with elements of fanciful surprise.

Each is an invitation to dance with your dreams.
