"Storyteller"

To
me, reading is as essential as breath to the body.
Growing up as an only child, books were my best
friends and constant companions. This lifelong love
is evident in my artwork. I've an illustrative
style... with images that give the sense of having
been a page from a story... a magical moment being
viewed from a discreet distance, so as not to break
the spell. That feeling of old illustrations is
enhanced by my technique. My images begin as
"etchings", a centuries old process of drawing on
metal to produce a printing plate. It was used long
ago in book illustration, before modern mass
printing. It is a technique that by its nature
invites detail. When it is combined with the
delicate hand tinting of watercolor, the etching
conveys a quiet, intimate mood. It's that same
intimate feeling we experience when we curl up one
on one with a book.

It
is only natural, then, that books and reading would
be ardently celebrated in my imagery. If not as the
central subject, you'll, at the very least, notice
open books in the room interiors I've drawn, as if
to say, "Why be there if there's not a book there
also?" The images offered here, though, are those
directly related to books and the way in which they
illuminate our lives.
